Background of the Study

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to infection, leading to widespread inflammation and potential organ failure. Early detection and prompt treatment of sepsis are crucial for improving patient survival rates. This study will evaluate the effect of early sepsis detection by emergency nurses on patient survival at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa.

Statement of the Problem

Sepsis remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, especially in emergency settings. Early detection of sepsis by emergency nurses can significantly improve patient outcomes by allowing for timely interventions. However, the effect of early sepsis detection by nurses on patient survival rates at FMC Yenagoa is not well-documented. This study will explore the role of emergency nurses in early sepsis detection and its effect on patient survival.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effect of early sepsis detection by emergency nurses on patient survival at FMC Yenagoa.
  2. To evaluate the skills and strategies employed by emergency nurses in detecting sepsis at an early stage.
  3. To identify barriers to early sepsis detection and their impact on patient survival in the emergency department.

Research Questions

  1. How does early sepsis detection by emergency nurses impact patient survival at FMC Yenagoa?
  2. What strategies and tools are most effective for early sepsis detection by emergency nurses?
  3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in detecting sepsis early, and how do these challenges affect patient outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Early sepsis detection by emergency nurses significantly improves patient survival at FMC Yenagoa.
  2. There is no significant difference in patient survival rates based on the timing of sepsis detection by emergency nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on emergency nursing practices related to sepsis detection at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. Limitations include potential challenges in retrospective data analysis and the availability of consistent patient information.

Definitions of Terms

  • Early Sepsis Detection: The identification of early signs of sepsis, including fever, tachycardia, and hypotension, by emergency nurses, which allows for prompt intervention.
  • Patient Survival: The continuation of life after the diagnosis of sepsis, typically measured by the length of hospital stay, recovery, or discharge without major complications.
